CLEARANCE: Vintage 1950s Ceil Chapman Dress

If you know vintage designers you'll know why this dress is priced as it is regardless of its issues. This is a Ceil Chapman, designer to Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Deborah Kerr among many many others. This is from the 1950s. Beautiful goldish satin taffeta base covered in ivory tulle and utterly dripping in faux pearl beads and sequins with rhinestone centers. Its stunning. There's just no other word for it. There is a layer of tulle along the inside bottom hem, about the last ten inches, to give the hem some shape and movement. There is a metal zipper on the side. Two labels. One reads Ceil Chapman of course. That's on the side. The one behind the neck reads Hollywood, Wilkes Barre, PA. Please read condition below as this ha some issues.

Ok, here we go. I found this dress is horrible shape. I've done what I could, but here is what's left.... First the original metal zipper fell apart at some point. Someone put in a new metal zipper, but did it behind the original one, so the first one is still there semi hidden in front pf the newer one. The new one works great. Next, some of the beads have fallen off and I'm sure there are others getting ready to, but there are still so many that are totally secure, so that's not a big deal to me but I wanted you to know. Third, the tulle on the bodice and upper part of the skirt has one or two pinhead sized holes. No biggie. Fourth and the real big issue is the bottom of the skirt. Its not in great shape. The tulle that backs the bottom hem is mostly disintegrated and falling to pieces. Also the inside of the taffeta there is stained with what I can only guess is old mold stains as this was pretty moldy smelling when I found her. I've soaked and soaked and soaked this and this is as much as I could get out. But the musty smell is mostly gone so I believe I have halted the damage tat was bring done. We got lucky because the stains seem to be only on the inside, they didn't bleed through, so yay for that! Other than these there is maybe a loose stitch here or there or faint smudge. But the real issues are as described. And really, its mostly that hem. Were I a better seamstress than I am, I would remove the bottom six inches or so and rehem it and add some more tulle. You'd have to be clever with the beading but that would get rid and repair most of the worst of it. Someone with some skills and determination could get themselves a simply stunning Ceil Chapman at a very reasonable price if they don't mind doing the work. Why its in my Scratch and Dent section, as is, and is priced accordingly. Please note: I will not discount any more off this price, it would be several hundred dollars more without these flaws.
